THE Motor Vehicle Accident Fund says the number of fatal crashes and fatalities recorded from November 22 to December 18 showed a slight decrease when compared to the same period from previous years.
In a media statement on Tuesday, the fund said 46 fatalities and 289 crashes were recorded between November 22 and December 18, and 517 injuries were recorder during the same time.
This year’s results indicate that there is a reduction of 21 percent for fatal crashes, 38 percent for injuries and 22 percent for fatalities compared to the same period last year.
According to the Fund, most crashes recorded were roll-overs, representing 34 percent of total crashes followed by collisions with 29 percent and pedestrian-related crashes by 18 percent.
“The causes of roll-over crashes are mostly attributed to how the driver uses the road, consider the surrounding environment given the condition of the vehicle while risk factors are driver behaviour and speeding.
“The Fund reminds all road users to stop the loss of lives in line with the theme of this year’s Festive Season Road Safety Campaign . The statistics shows that it is possible to save more lives,” MVA Fund said in the statement.
