PROFESSOR Mburumba Kerina’s new bride, Naomi Karukire Kerina, died on Monday night, after collapsing at a party in Windhoek, Confidente can reveal.
Former Secretary-General of the Council of Churches in Namibia (CCN), Maria Kapere, who is closely related to the couple, confirmed her death.
“The young bride of Professor Kerina passed away suddenly, and we are in distress since last night (Monday),”Kapere said.
The couple tied the knot a month ago, during a lavish ceremony at his home village of Aminius, in the Omaheke region.
Naomi was the professor’s second wife and was introduced to him by his deceased first wife, Evelhardine Kapuuo-Kerina, who died two years ago.
In an interview with Confidente just days after his nuptials, Kerina said he was excited about giving marriage a second try.
The 84-year-old Kerina also joked about how new Kerina juniors would be running around soon.
“It must happen. Every wife wants to hold a baby, and Mrs Kerina is not an exception.”
Kerina played a major role in the liberation of his country, and is widely known as the person who named Namibia.
“Love never ends, it is always new. One simply has to be honest in a relationship and love oneself, so they can love the other partner.
“When that is in place, it is returned. I’m a man who believes in one husband, one wife and one boyfriend and one girlfriend,” Kerina said shortly after his marriage.
