Dr Helena Ndume, Namibia’s pioneering ophthalmologist and cataract surgeon, who has to date, performed over 35 000 sight-restoring surgeries, completely free of charge, has won the New African Woman Award, in the Health, Science and Technology category. Held at the Terrou-Bi hotel in the Senegalese capital Dakar on 12 April, the awards recognise, celebrate and honour African women, who have excelled in the past 12 months.
