THE chairperson of the council of traditional leaders and King of the Ondonga, King Immanuel Elifas Kauluma has strongly urged all the authorities in his circle to solve traditional related problems within the established structure of the traditional authorities.
“One might ask on what happened to our customary law, that we have now resorted to solve our traditional disputes at the High Court. Is that because we have money? Let us by all means solve the traditional related problems within the traditional authorities,” said King Kauluma.
These remarks were read on behalf of King Kauluma by Josef Asino, the senior councillor of Ondonga Traditional Authority on the occasion of the commemoration of the death of King Mandume ya Ndemufayo at Omhedi over the weekend.
The Ondonga king further encouraged all traditional communities to refrain from unethical behaviour such as the abuse of alcohol and violence against women and children.
“It is our plea as the council of traditional leaders to help our Government half way by encouraging the traditional communities to work hard in the fields of agriculture to produce food for your families. Even though some part of this country did not receive sufficient rainfall, we urge those who received some drops to cultivate and produce food”.
He further emphasised the brave role that the late King Mandume played within the traditional communities of Namibia by opening their eyes and fighting against the illegal occupation of land and injustice by European colonisers.
King Mandume was accorded heroes status by the Government in 2002.
“Despite having lack of military weapons our forefathers like King Mandume fought against the imperialism head on with the aim to protect the welfare of their people. And as a result many died, may their souls rest in eternal peace.”
King Kauluma also commended the Oukwanyama Traditional Authority for organising an event aimed at preserving the history and culture of the Ovakwanyama people.
