THREE Windhoek men were recently arrested for producing N$27 700 fake money as well as machines and other items they used for the illegal act.
The suspects, Johannes Setson (36), Kapia Jekonia (34) and Uandja Patrick (31) made a brief appearance in the Katutura Magistrate’s Court last week on charges of producing counterfeit money. They were released on N$1 500 bail each and investigations into the matter continue.
The trio were caught in the act by police officers in a Katutura room, producing thousands of dollars of fake N$200 notes. The arrest was circulated on social media, attracting comments for and against the police officers’ conduct.
In the circulated video, police officers can be heard instructing and questioning the suspects in the local Oshiwambo language. The officers instructed the suspects to sit and not step on the fake notes so as to conceal them. The officers also asked the suspects to demonstrate how they produced the fake notes. The suspects pointed to a real N$200 note from which they produced the counterfeit money, the machine they used as well scissors they used to cut out the fake money.
Nampol’s Deputy Inspector General James Tjivikua however condemned the officers’ act by sharing the video on social media saying it is unethical.
“Therefore we will look for the said suspects to give their statements for the Namibian Police to lay disciplinary and criminal charges against the said members. Their actions are abhorrent and unacceptable.
