FORMER Miss Namibia 1993, Barbara Kahatjipara, was recently involved in a physical fight with twin sisters Selma and Kandi Neumbo at a popular upmarket Windhoek restaurant which left her nursing bruises on her arms and with a bloody nose.
Confidente could not independently verify what triggered the cat fight as the acquaintances gave conflicting versions of what caused the brawl that led to the two parties opening counter assault charges against each other.
Nampol Chief Inspector Kauna Shikwambi confirmed the counter cases of assault with intent to do grevious bodily harm on CR584/11/2016 and CR641/11/2016 respectively saying once investigations are done, the dockets will be sent to the Prosecutor General for prosecution.
In an interview with Confidente Monday, Kahatjipara alleges that she was attacked by the sisters following a light conversation with an acquaintance, when she commended the latter on a hairstyle before one of the sisters’ friend reportedly accused her of being ignorant about the hairstyle. At the time of the incident, the sisters were celebrating their birthday. “Her disbelief about my ignorance about this specific hair technique offended her as I was adamant that I was not in the know and this angered her even more where she left in a huff and a puff. This interference by the said friend set off this whole unfortunate incident and the subsequent reprehensible physical assault by Selma and Kandi. This incident was a classic case of a mentality of schoolyard bullying and gross entitlement,” Kahatjipara retorted.
Kahatjipara narrates that after the sisters’ friend left, Selma reportedly asked her as to why she was rude and disrespectful. “I told her in no uncertain terms that I was not rude neither disrespectful to her friend. I further commended Selma on her loyalty towards her friend. Selma left to sit outside. Kandi and I later went outside,” Kahatjipara said. All hell broke loose Kahatjipara said when Kandi asked her sister Selma about what they were discussing earlier to which Selma reportedly replied by labelling the former beauty queen as a “skinny b*#%h and a liar of life” before threatening to beat her up.
“When she could not substantiate her insults to me, I returned the insults by calling her a fat b*#%h that gathers others’ children because she does not have her own just like me. It was at this point that she slapped me. I did not retaliate physically.
“…Selma then grabbed me by the neck in a strangle hold from which I was trying to wriggle myself out when Kandi joined and pulled my hair from behind and both brought me down on my back on the ground. Selma sat on top of me and also started pulling my hair whilst Kandi punched me on my forehead twice. She landed another fist on my nose which caused profuse nose bleeding while Selma was still sitting on top of me with her hefty frame which rendered me completely immobile.”Kahatjipara said that it took security guards and two waiters to get the sisters’ off her. She added that when her mother contacted Selma to find out what transpired, the latter reportedly said that the beating was necessary because she (Kahatjipara) was never given a hiding as a child.
“This senseless act of violence against me will be an eye opener that violence can be meted by women to women rather than the conventional portrayal of GBV from men to women.” However the Neumbo sisters claim that Kahatjipara was being unnecessarily argumentative on that fateful night when she reportedly approached their table. After asking her to leave, Kahatjipara reportedly said that the sisters did not own the place and that she could do whatever she liked. Selma said, “We told her that her presence was causing a problem and repeatedly asked her to leave. She wouldn’t do that until our friend left. She then concentrated on me. I told her she is a liar and a thief based on things she did in the past. That’s when she called me a fat barren b*&%h. I then called her a skinny b*&%h. She then went on saying that it’s no wonder my man left me because I am barren.” Kandi said that Kahatjipara at some point kicked her from under the table saying that the heated moment went on for several minutes before they had enough. “I won’t lie I did punch her. She underestimated us and when she tackled my sister, she thought she had the upper hand. She called Selma a fat barren b*&%h who cannot have children. She can’t go around disrespecting people, thinking she is more important than others. We are equal.”
