WHAT in the name of all that is unholy is ‘FOMO’ and whose brilliant idea was it to make it one of the most trending words/abbreviations of 2015?I have often said that I was either born a couple of decades too late or that I somehow carried on traits from my past life to this one which makes me an old soul.

For some reason I find it hard to catch up with all the fads that my fellow millennials follow ever so religiously.Oh yes, it’s disheartening to say but we millennials love our fads and the more bizarre they are the more we love them. I have concluded that the obsession with these fads is a result of trying too hard to stand out and to seem more weird, because as you know weird is the new cool, it is the new normal.

Having seen hashtags such as ‘TBT’ (throwback Thursday), ‘MCM’ (man crush Mondays) and ‘YOLO’ (you only live once) trending on social media I was forced to learn them in an attempt to also be in the know.

However to my dismay there are more hashtags trending every day, with ‘FOMO’ being the latest one I was evidently oblivious about. As if these hashtags are not enough, there are also incessant selfies which help us indulge in our narcissism – selfies such as the the after sex selfies, the bathroom selfie, the belfies, the thigh gap selfies and the list goes on.

It is exhausting to be honest, constantly having to be hunched over your computer like a hermit all day searching the internet for what is trending on that day. It’s no wonder people are constantly on their cell phones too busy to interact with each other. It is an antisocial act but a sad consequence of people trying to be more sociable by learning what is the latest fad, or at least that is what I like to think.

Having become miserable after scouring the internet for the latest fads for hours on end, I plead to my fellow millennials to please slow down with their trends.Yes, social media is the best thing since sliced bread and Betty White, but it’s the driving force behind all this hashtag madness, among many other things.

I would be much obliged if we could take a break on these fads, at least just for the first half of 2016 so those of us old souls can catch-up, if not I fear I might become a social pariah.

Another suggestion would be to form an official committee that will release a booklet once a month just to keep people updated on any new developments going on in terms of the latest fads, or are booklets too old school?

If not I fear that those of us who fail to catch on only have the uprising of the machines to look forward to because with it comes the fall of technology (and social media) as we know it, which will hopefully rescue us from this madness.
