AT Least 230 Walvis Bay residents collected three tonnes (3000 kg) of waste from various areas in the coastal town during a daylong cleanup drive recently.
The municipality’s Public Relations and Customer Service Division in a press statement said that the 230 participants represented government, schools, churches, private and non-governmental organisations during the campaign that was held on 16 March.
They collected 3000 kg of waste in 903 black plastic bags from the B2 main road; C14 Rooikop Road and Union streets with the common goal of cleaning up the coastal town.
The campaign was designed by the municipality’s Department of Water, Waste and Environmental Management. It is a community clean-up project aimed at consolidating efforts to encourage the public and stakeholders to keep the environment clean.
Walvis Bay Mayor, Alderman Immanuel Wilfried in a speech delivered by Councillor Paulus Kauhondamwa on that day, encouraged participants to remain custodians of the environment while adding that the campaign was to develop positive behaviour towards t
he local environment and enhance social responsibility towards the country.
“No matter where you find yourself, continuously keep the environment you are in litter-free and waste-free.”
The cleanup campaign will take place on a quarterly basis. The first campaign took place last year in Kuisebmond and in Narraville between September and November 2017. To date, the Team Up to Clean Up has collected 5050 kg of litter and over 620 community members participated.
Meanwhile, the mayor has also called on councillors to carry out similar cleaning campaigns under various themes assigned to them while encouraging residents to share innovative ideas and solutions.
